Visiting Bengal with TarkataZ
A different way to experience Bengal – through music, people, nature and living culture
Bengal is not only a place to visit. It is a place to listen.
Along the Ajoy River, in village courtyards, Baul akhras, folk gatherings and quiet rural landscapes, music and everyday life remain closely connected.
Since 2016, TarkataZ has been documenting and building relationships with musicians, artists and cultural practitioners across Bengal. Through this work, we invite international visitors to experience Bengal beyond conventional tourism – through music, storytelling, community, nature and genuine human connection.
Our base at Golok Ecospace in Joydev Kenduli, Birbhum, provides a place where artists, musicians, researchers, photographers, filmmakers and cultural travellers can meet local communities and experience Bengal’s living folk traditions.
Who Is This For?
🎵 International Musicians
If you are a musician interested in Baul, Bengali folk, world music, improvisation or traditional instruments, TarkataZ can help you connect with local artists and musical communities.
Possibilities may include:
- Meeting Baul and folk musicians
- Informal musical exchanges
- Learning traditional instruments
- Participating in music gatherings
- Collaborative improvisation
- Song-sharing sessions
- Recording and documentation projects
- Developing longer-term artistic collaborations
We are particularly interested in artist-to-artist exchange rather than staged cultural tourism.
🎨 Artists & Creative Practitioners
For visual artists, dancers, writers, performers and interdisciplinary artists, Bengal offers an extraordinary environment for creative research.
You may spend time:
- Observing village life
- Meeting folk artists
- Exploring local craft traditions

- Developing collaborative work
- Photographing landscapes and communities
- Creating work inspired by Baul philosophy and rural Bengal
Longer visits can potentially develop into creative residencies or collaborative projects.
🎥 Photographers & Filmmakers
Bengal offers an extraordinary visual landscape – but photographing people and cultural traditions requires sensitivity.
TarkataZ can help visiting photographers and filmmakers approach communities through relationships and introductions rather than simply arriving with a camera.
Possible projects include:
- Documentary photography
- Music documentation
- Artist portraits
- Short films
- Cultural documentaries
- Festival photography
- Rural-life stories
- Audio-visual archive projects
We encourage visitors to discuss their project with us in advance so that appropriate introductions and permissions can be considered.

Where appropriate, we can help visitors connect with musicians, practitioners and local cultural networks.
Please contact us before travelling if your visit involves formal research, recording, interviews or publication.
🌿 Cultural Travellers
You don’t need to be a musician or researcher.
Perhaps you simply want to experience a different side of Bengal.
You might spend a morning walking through a village, an afternoon beside the Ajoy River and an evening listening to Baul songs around a gathering.
The experience is intentionally slower.
Listen. Walk. Meet people. Share food. Hear music. Sit by the river.
The aim is not to rush from one attraction to another, but to allow Bengal to reveal itself naturally.
What Can You Experience?
Depending on the season, local programme and availability, visitors may experience:
🎶 Baul music gatherings
🥁 Folk instrument sessions
🌿 Village walks
📷 Photography projects
🎥 Documentary projects
🔥 Riverside evenings
🍚 Traditional Bengali food

🧘 Meditation and sound experiences
🎵 Artist collaborations

What to Expect
TarkataZ is not a conventional tour operator.
A visit may involve unexpected moments: a musician arriving in the evening, an invitation to sit and listen, a village gathering, a spontaneous song, changing weather, a walk beside the river or simply a long conversation over tea.
That unpredictability is part of the experience.
Expect:
Simple living
Rural surroundings
Local food
Informal musical gatherings
Slow travel
Warm hospitality
Unexpected encounters
If you are looking for a highly structured luxury itinerary, this may not be the right experience.
If you are looking for connection, culture and authentic human encounters, you may feel very much at home.
Cultural Etiquette
When visiting rural communities and meeting folk practitioners, we ask every visitor to approach the experience with respect, patience and openness.
Please:
- Ask before photographing people.
- Ask before recording music or conversations.
- Respect religious and spiritual spaces.
- Dress appropriately for rural and cultural settings.
- Avoid treating musicians as tourist attractions.
- Listen before asking questions.
- Respect artists’ wishes regarding recordings and publication.
- Do not assume that every gathering is a public performance.
- Be sensitive when discussing personal or spiritual subjects.
- Respect local customs and community boundaries.
Most importantly:
Come as a guest, not as a consumer.
Photography & Filming
TarkataZ has a long-term practice of photography and documentary filmmaking, and we understand the importance of preserving cultural stories through visual media.
At the same time, documentation should never come at the expense of the people being documented.
If you are planning to:
- Film musicians
- Record songs
- Conduct interviews
- Photograph artists
- Produce a documentary
- Publish research
- Create commercial content
please discuss your project with us beforehand.
We can help establish appropriate introductions and clarify permissions wherever possible.
The Best Time to Visit
Different seasons offer very different experiences.
Winter | November–February
Generally one of the best periods for cultural travel in Birbhum.
Cooler weather makes rural exploration comfortable, and the period around Joydev Kenduli’s Baul festival can be particularly vibrant.
Spring | March–April
A beautiful period for exploring rural Bengal, music, nature and village life.
Monsoon | June–September
The landscape becomes intensely green and the Ajoy River changes character.
Travel can be less predictable, but photographers and nature lovers may find this season particularly rewarding.
Autumn | October–November
A beautiful period for cultural and rural travel, with festivals and changing landscapes.
Always contact us before planning specifically around an event, as festival dates and programmes can change.
Cultural Exchange & Artist Residencies
TarkataZ is particularly interested in developing longer-term relationships between Bengal and international artistic communities.
We welcome enquiries from:
Musicians • Artists • Researchers • Photographers • Filmmakers • Writers • Students • Universities • Cultural organisations
Potential collaborations can include:
- Artist residencies
- Music exchanges
- Workshops
- Documentary projects
- Cultural research
- Collaborative performances
- Cross-cultural composition
- Photography projects
- Educational programmes
Our ambition is not simply to bring international visitors to Bengal, but to create reciprocal relationships in which people from different cultures learn from one another.
This is increasingly becoming an important part of TarkataZ’s artistic direction, including our developing Wales–Bengal / Welsh–Baul cultural exchange work.
A Note on Authenticity
Baul culture is a living tradition.
It should not be reduced to costumes, performances or tourist entertainment.
At TarkataZ, we try to approach Baul and Bengali folk traditions through relationships, listening and long-term documentation.
Our work is based on connections built over many years with musicians and cultural practitioners across Bengal.
We therefore encourage visitors to come with curiosity rather than preconceived ideas.
There is much more to discover when we take the time to listen.
